STATEMENT

McDonald Johnson Lawyers collect and deal with personal information in accordance with the National Privacy Principles found in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). As lawyers, we also owe our clients a duty of confidentiality and non-disclosure.
 
Collection of information 
McDonald Johnson Lawyers collects personal information to provide legal services and to meet our legal obligations. We will only collect as much information as is necessary. If you do not provide personal information that we request, it may compromise our ability to provide you with good legal service. 
 
Use and disclosure of information 
We will use any personal information for the primary purpose for which we collected it, usually, the provision of legal services. We may also use personal information for a secondary purpose, as permitted by the Privacy Act. For example, we may brief a barrister, necessarily disclosing your personal information to him or her. We may also disclose personal information when we are required to by law, or when you consent for us to do so. 
 
Access and correction 
Subject to the exceptions in the Privacy Act, you have a right to access the personal information we hold about you. By law, we must verify your identity before allowing access. If the information we hold is not correct, we will take reasonable steps to alter the information so that it is complete, accurate and up-to-date. We may charge a fee to access this information. 
 
Other people’s information 
If you provide us with personal information about someone else, you must ensure that you are entitled to disclose that information to us, and that we can collect and use it without taking any further steps under the Privacy Act. 
 
Information security 
We take reasonable steps to protect all information held by us from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, alteration or disclosure. We keep records physically secure and restrict access to electronic records with secure passwords.
